We have a new Saturday morning rhythm where we bring the boy into our bed and look at pictures together. It’s usually by his request.
So instead of a weekend morning stroll (especially when Dallas is in the mid-eighties by 8am), we’ve opted for a morning scroll through my camera roll. Here are a few things we’ve discovered after a quick flick of the thumb and how I’ve tried to explain them to a two-year-old.
Lobster roll - Sometimes when food looks really good, I want to remember it. And I’m not afraid to look like a tourist.
The new basketball goal - It’s fun to shoot hoops!
My headphone jack - I forgot the dongle for my wired headphones on the plane, which meant I couldn’t listen to any music and I knew your mom would think that’s funny so I took this picture and sent it to her before we took off. Can you say dongle? (he can)
The sky - It was really pretty that day.
Receipts - When I travel for work, I have to save my receipts to get reimbursed for things but I almost always forget. Can you say reimbursed? (he can’t)
Bike helmets - I was shopping for a new bike helmet, and even though I didn’t buy one, we now get to remember that day forever.
An unopened envelope - I think I needed the person’s return address for something. Or I may have taken this to make fun of their handwriting.
A video of your first steps - Probably the best day of my life.
A screenshot of a restaurant address - We ended up not going there because Mexican food sounded better.
A screenshot of my phone home screen - This was an accident.
Bottles of wine - Your mom loves wine. She always gets to tell me what to drink, and I’m always happy.
The sky again - Look at those clouds!
That’s our life right now. Fewer selfies than you’d expect, not enough receipts, and a strange combination of completely inconsequential things and life-defining events.
Thanks for reading this far.

#content
The Goodnight Train - Really good children’s books are rare. It takes both great writing and illustrations to make one stick. This and The Little Blue Truck are the ones I enjoy coming back to.
Mad Men - I can’t get into it. So many people have told me I would like this show, but I don’t. Does anyone know why? And does anyone have any must-see recommendations before we restart The West Wing?
How to Lead Podcast - Is it weird and self-promote-y to put an interview of me in here? Yes. But I listen to this podcast every week and would recommend it to anyone who likes to do some critical thinking on their way to work.
Question
I have 3,808 images of the boy on my phone. If we carry on taking photos at this rate, by the time he turns my age, I will have 51,328. So, in the spirit of not knowing what to do with the fact that my phone’s camera captures both the most and least important things in my life and houses them in the same place…what’s the person, place, or thing you have the most pictures of right now? It doesn’t have to be a nice answer either. Because after the boy, I have lots of screenshots of shoes. For some reason, I act as though taking a screenshot is just as good as owning the shoes. Which, in my defense, is a huge win for the family budget.
